ACTOM acquires specialist air conditioning engineers and contractors company Luwa SA |

The well-known South African Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) electrical engineering group ACTOM (Pty) Ltd (ACTOM) via their Power Conversion Division has acquired leading air-conditioning engineers and contractors specialist company Luwa (SA) (Pty) Ltd (Luwa SA) from its South African shareholders.
The acquisition was concluded in January and is effective from the 1st of February 2011. Luwa SA was established in South Africa in 1971, this year marking their 40th anniversary. Luwa is one of the leading and oldest players in the industrial ventilation and air-conditioning solutions environment and offers design, manufacture and installation capabilities. Luwa SA is based in Pinetown and Brackenfell.
Paul Cuthbert, Managing Director of ACTOM’s Power Conversion Division, said the acquisition complements the group’s activities in the air movement, air pollution and dust control markets and further reinforces the group’s commitment to investing in quality South African engineering companies aligned with its market focus.
“ACTOM is well established as a major supplier of gas and dust emission control systems as well as fans for industrial mining and power applications. The acquisition of Luwa SA extends our involvement in the air movement and controls industry into new industries such as health care and pharmaceuticals via Luwa’s Clean Room Technology,” he stated.
Luwa will operate as a stand-alone business within ACTOM’s Power Conversion Division. “We view the company as a successful and well-run operation and have no intention of incorporating it into another business unit,” Cuthbert emphasised.
Frank Van Dongen, Luwa SA’s Managing Director, commented: “From our point of view an important benefit of the deal is that, by becoming part of one of the most forward-looking BBBEE groups in the country, we gain meaningful status, which opens up new business opportunities for us.
“Another major benefit for our company is that the financial muscle of ACTOM with its strong balance sheet and successful track record as a locally-owned group promises a solid capital base from which to more easily expand our business as requirements demand.”
He added: “We continue to have access to Luwa’s international technology which is a key player in the global textile air conditioning industry and are able to offer solutions to industry generally based on 40 years of local experience.”

The History of Air conditioning through the ages to the airconditioning systems as we know them today
An earlier form of air conditioning was invented in Persia (Iran) thousands of years ago in the form of wind shafts on the roof, which caught the wind and passed it through water and blew the cooled air into the building.
The 19th century British scientist and inventor, Michael Faraday discovered that compressing and liquefying a certain gas could chill air when the liquified ammonia was allowed to evaporate. His idea remained largely theoretical.
In 1842, Florida physician Dr. John Gorrie used compressor technology to create ice, which he would use to cool air blown over malaria and yellow fever patients. He eventually had a vision of using his ice-making machine to regulate environment in buildings. He even envisioned centralized air conditioning that could cool entire cities. Gorrie was granted a patent in1851 (Patent #8080, USPTO ) for his ice-making machine. The technology was attacked by Northern businessmen with the help of religious leaders they got to call the technologyblasphemous, in order to protect its business of exporting natural ice to Southern states. When both his partner and he died in 1855, the idea of air conditioning died with him for the time being.
One of the first uses of air conditioning for personal comfort was in 1902 when the New York Stock Exchange's new building was equipped with a central cooling as well as heating system. Alfred Wolff, an engineer from Hoboken, New Jersey who is considered the forerunner in the quest to cool a working environment, helped design the new system, transferring this budding technology from textile mills to commercial buildings.

Daikin Emura wins Japanese Good Design Award |

On September 29th, the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization announced the Daikin Emura had won a Good Design Award 2010. The European Design residential-use split type is Daikin's first air conditioner created exclusively in Europe, where it has already won an iF Product Award and red dot honourable mention Award. The awards ceremony took place on November 10th in Tokyo, with the recipients of special prizes announced during the event. Daikin Emura was created by Daikin Europe N.V. and renowned German agency, Design 3. The model successfully unifies European concepts and values with Japanese technologies, adding a new flair not previously seen in Japanese models. Jury members praised this style with comments including, “We can feel the European culture and values embodied in this design,” and “This model has a beautiful simplicity lacking in ordinary multi-functional Japanese air conditioners. |

Daikin Europe N.V. introduces two new fan coil ranges aimed at high-end market

The FWF-B 600 x 600 cassette and the FWC-B 900 x 900 cassette units feature a stylish design, improved performance and a wide range of controllers and accessories (including a fresh air intake kit). Both ranges support 2-pipe and 4-pipe installation. The FWC-B also features a round flow panel for optimum 360° air distribution and an efficient DC motor.
Comfort in style
The new ceiling mounted cassette units sport a stylish design in RAL9010 white that blends with every interior. Air discharge has been improved and the air flow pattern can be adapted by closing one or two flaps. A fresh air intake kit is also available. The FWC-B 900 x 900 cassette also offers a round flow panel for even air flow and uniform room temperature distribution.
Flexible in application
The new ranges are fitted standard with a drain pump, so condensation is no longer an issue even when installation space is limited. All units support 2-pipe or 4-pipe installation as well as a wide range of controllers and accessories. Low sound levels – from 30dB(A) to 45dB(A) at low speed, depending on model – make the units suitable for any application. Energy consumption is also low, with the DC-powered 900 x 900 units consuming four times less energy than AC-powered 900 x 900 units.
Launch of the present models is foreseen for January 2011.
